Description
This is W2 tool steel with the following chemistry:C : 1
Mn: 0.30
S: 0.005
P: 0.010
V: 0.16
Cr: 0.03
I had the steel tested at a laboratory in the US, and you can see the test results in the photographs above.
This particular composition of steel is highly desirable for custom knife making. It is essentially very clean plain high-carbon steel (like W1, 1095, or T10) plus vanadium. The addition of vanadium helps keep the grain structure regular and the grain size small during heat treatment, which makes the quenched and tempered steel tougher and less brittle.
Each bar is 12" x 1.5" x 5/16. The thickness is a bit more robust than lots of bar stock, so it is excellent for large blades, choppers, and even forging.
This steel produces excellent hamons.
Since the carbon content is high (1%), I recommend quenching in Parks 50 quench oil.
