Harper & Brothers

Harper & Brothers was a historic American publishing house that began operations in 1817 in New York City, United States. Founded by brothers James Harper, John Harper, Joseph Wesley Harper, and Fletcher Harper, the company started as a small printing business and later grew into one of the most influential publishers of the nineteenth century. It became known for publishing books, magazines, and literary works that reached readers across the United States and beyond. In 1833, the firm officially adopted the name Harper & Brothers. The company eventually evolved into Harper & Row and later became part of HarperCollins, a subsidiary of News Corp, giving its publishing legacy a worldwide reach. Today, its influence extends across numerous countries and English-language markets worldwide.
